Pronunciation Tip - Thuh or Thee?

We normally pronounce it /thuh/ when the word after it starts with a consonant sound.

- the banana

- the cheeseburger

- the West

But when the comes before a vowel sound, we pronounce it as /thee/.

- the apple

- the ice cream

- the East

For emphasis on a particular word, we can use /thee/ whether the word begins with a consonant or a vowel sound.

"You're a member of BTS? The /thee/ BTS?"
